MOISTURE SCAVENGERS FOR THE POLYURETHANE INDUSTRY  

SYLOSIV® zeolite powders are highly effective, non-toxic moisture scavengers for 1K- and 2K-Polyurethane systems.
SYLOSIV® zeolite powders prevent the formation of foam and bubbles by surpressing the reaction of free water with
the isocyanate group:
 

Due to its high adsorption forces, SYLOSIV ® zeolite powder exhibits a high adsorption capacity even at very low moisture concentration and immobilizes the adsorbed water in the zeolite crystal structure. When adsorbing water, the physical structure of SYLOSIV ® powder stays intact. No dissolution takes place which may cause interference with other components of the Polyurethane system.

SYLOSIV® zeolite powder shows a uniform pore opening of _ 3Å. These extremely small pores are engineered to take up water molecules, while at the same time no air is entrapped or released which can lead to blisters and bubbles in the Polyurethane film under unfavourable conditions. These small pores further ensure that no undesired co-adsorption of other components typically present in Polyurethane formulations occurrs.
 

SYLOSIV® zeolite powders are well compatible with commonly used polyols, polyethers and isocyanates. They are easily dispersible and especially stabilized to ensure sufficiently long hardening times. Grace Davison is offering a range of SYLOSIV ® moisture scavengers fine-tuned for the Polyurethane market which exhibit different product properties in terms of reactivity and water adsorption. They are optimized for different application requirements to best fit our customer´s requirements.
 

Product Overview

SYLOSIV® K300 is the latest development of Grace Davison for 1K- and 2K-Polyurethane moisture scavenging. It combines good compatibility with the most commonly used isocyanates with a 5% increased available water adsorption capacity compared to competitive grades. Due to significant modifications in the production process, this is also the most environmentally friendly grade in production.

Since long, SYLOSIV® A3 is the standard product for 1K- and 2K-Polyurethane systems. It shows good compatibility with all most commonly used isocyanates and is easy dispersible.

SYLOSIV® A300 is a special development for highly reactive, sensitive isocyanate systems. Due to its reduced basicity, it leads to a longer potlife compared with competitive grades:

SYLOSIV® A4 sometimes is used when the risk of microbubble formation can be tolerated. SYLOSIV® A4 exhibits a slightly larger pore opening (~ 4Å) than SYLOSIV® A3/K300/A300 (~3Å). This can lead to desorption of nitrogen trapped in the pore structure (which is prohibited by the smaller pore opening of the other grades). In addition, this grade is not stabilized therefore causing a much shorter potlife. On the other hand, it exhibits a 5 – 10% higher adsorption capacity than 3Å zeolites.

Grace also offers SYLOSIV® P3, a dispersion of 50% SYLOSIV ® A3 in castor oil, for those customers who can not
handle powders in their operations.
